2010 Olympics: Team Canada Named

The moment all of Canada has been waiting for, the announcement of the 2010 Olympic Roster.

Goaltenders: Martin Brodeur (New Jersey), Marc-Andre Fleury (Pittsburgh), Roberto Luongo (Vancouver)

Defensemen: Drew Doughty (Los Angeles),  Dan Boyle (San Jose), Duncan Keith (Chicago), Scott Niedermayer (C) (Anaheim), Chris Pronger (alternate captain) (Philadelphia), Brent Seabrook (Chicago), Shea Weber (Nashville)

Forwards: Sidney Crosby (A) (Pittsburgh), Joe Thornton (San Jose), Corey Perry (Anaheim), Brendan Morrow (Dallas), Patrick Marleau (San Jose), Rick Nash (Columbus), Patrice Bergeron (Boston),  Ryan Getzlaf (Anaheim), Dany Heatley (San Jose), Jarome Iginla (A) (Calgary), Jonathan Toews (Chicago), Mike Richards (Philadelphia), Eric Staal (Carolina)

I'm a little surprised that Bergeron was selected over Jeff Carter, Marty St. Louis,  Vinny Lecavalier or even Brad Richards. Other than that no real surprises. Although some were hoping Mike Green would be on the team instead of Doughty.

Prospal Out Up to 3 Weeks

According to Jim Cerny the official beat writer for NYR.com:
Vinny Prospal out 10 days to 3 weeks after arthroscopic knee surgery this morning
That's certainly not something that the Rangers needed. Prospal is currently second on the team in points with 32 and leads the team with 24 assists.

The question is will Sather be calling up for a replacement from Hartford or will the team just continue on by putting Aaron Voros or Erik Christensen back into the lineup? It's never a good thing when a team struggling to score goals loses one of their better offensive players. Hopefully Prospal is back in the lineup sooner rather than later.

Former NHL Heavyweight Krzysztof Oliwa Doing MMA

There are rumors circulating that former NHL heavyweight Krzysztof Oliwa is making an attempt at a career in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).

As described by one member of HFboards.com :
There are rumours in Poland, even Krzysztof confirmed that in a TV interwiev, that he will make his debut in Mixed Martial Arts, and fight Mariusz Pudzianowski. Pudzian is a big celebrity in Poland, he is five time world champion in Strongmen Competition, he had so far one MMA fight and won it in 44 sec against a pro boxer.
The last time I heard Oliwa's name in the news, he was facing a lengthy prison sentence for assaulting his wife in Poland and leaving her pretty badly beaten with broken bones throughout her body.

Gilroy Recalled

As expected:
New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that defenseman Matt Gilroy has been recalled from the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League (AHL).
This is a result of yesterday's moves of sending Bobby Sanguinetti and Ilkka Heikkinen to Hartford.

Rangers Send Sanguinetti & Heikkinen To Hartford

New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that defensemen Bobby Sanguinetti and Ilkka Heikkinen have been assigned to the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League (AHL).
It's expected that Wade Redden, who was scratched in the last two games, will return to the lineup on Monday night when the Rangers play Carolina. With only five defenseman on the current roster, the Rangers are also expected to recall Matt Gilroy at some point before Monday night's game.

If you are wondering why the Rangers are making this move when they have won two games straight, there is in fact a method to Glen Sather's madness.

According to the NY Post:
The NHL’s eight-day holiday roster freeze goes into effect at midnight tonight and lasts through midnight, Dec. 27, with anyone on the roster at 12 PM ineligible for demotion to the AHL. Thus, absent an injury serious enough to merit time on IR, the Rangers, who were at the 23-player maximum, could not have made a personnel move for the duration of the freeze without these moves to clear roster space.

The History of "Potvin Sucks!"

If you have ever been to a Rangers game at Madison Square Garden you have definitely heard the "Potvin Sucks!" chant. [Video of Chant]

I've been asked by people at games "what are they saying?", "who is Potvin?", and my favorite "what number is he?" - of course the person who doesn't know the history of the chant thinks that this Potvin fellow is on the ice and he plays for the opposition.

The truth is, this guy called "Potvin", is Denis Potvin. He was a long-time Islander captain and one of the best defensemen ever to play in the NHL (I didn't just say that Rangers fans) but he retired in 1988. So, why are Rangers fans still chanting "Potvin Sucks!", more than 20 years later?

I found an excellent article over at Why Potvin Sucks - if you want to know the history the "Potvin Sucks!" chant then I recommend you check it out. A good read and even if you know about the Ulf Nilsson incident, which was the origin for the hatred towards Potvin by Rangers fans, you might be interested to hear the rest of the details.

Video: Avery Goes After Dwayne Roloson

Not much fun stuff to talk about in Rangerland these days, but here's a video clip from last night's game. Unfortunately that's about as much intensity as there was in the entire game last night. Was hoping that it would wake the Rangers up, which I'm sure was what Avery was hoping for as well.

Matt Gilroy Sent Down To Hartford

The New York Rangers today sent rookie defenseman Matt Gilroy to Hartford. Chad Johnson, who was called up from Hartford last week to backup Henrik Lundqvist, was also sent down. In his place Matt Zaba was called up.

Although Gilroy is on a one-way contract, his $1.75M cap hit will come off the books while he's in Hartford. The question is, was this move made to help Gilroy find his game? Or, are the Rangers on the brink of making a trade and need some extra cap space to make the deal.

Rangers Waiver Moves: Claim Christensen & Waive Valiquette

Bob McKenzie reports that the Rangers have claimed Erik Christensen off of waivers (he was placed on waivers yesterday by the Ducks). He also reported that New York waived Steve Valiquette.

According to Ranger Rants:
Steve Valiquette has been put on waivers with the hope he can be sent to Hartford (AHL) without anybody claiming him. Chad Johnson, a top 10 finalist for the Hobey Baker and the CCHA player of the year at Alaska-Fairbanks, has been recalled, though there are no plans for him to make his NHL debut. More than likely, the Rangers will try to bring in another veteran
At this point it's safe to assume that Valiquette has played his last game as a New York Ranger. At $725k Valiquette is already a cheap option as an NHL backup. If the Rangers attempted to re-call him then certainly someone would claim him as the Rangers would be responsible for half of his salary.

Ranger Rants went on to say "Christensen is a decent perimeter player who did not score in nine games for the Ducks this season." Sounds exactly what the Rangers need (sarcasm!).

How many years is it going to take management to realize that this team doesn't need to keep acquiring players who play the perimeter? I'm sick of this crap, put a team on the ice that can crash the net and put the puck in it. Expecting Gaborik to score all your God damn goals just isn't going to work!

Here's a little information about Puck Attax:
Building off the enormous global success of the Match Attax card game in Europe and the new to market Topps Attax game in the United States, The Topps Company, the leading creator and marketer of sports and related cards, today announced the release of Puck Attax, a new multi-player hockey card game that allows kids to manage their teams and face off against friends in head-to-head action.

The highly anticipated head-to-head card game is available now in Canada and the U.S.

“We are extremely excited to bring the Puck Attax game to NHL fans,” said Warren Friss, VP, Topps Sports and Entertainment. “Hockey fans are some of the most passionate and devoted fans in the world and we believe this new product will capture the excitement and imagination of kids.”

Topps originally developed the Attax game in 2007 with the English Premier League, now the world’s most popular card game.  In April 2009, Topps unveiled Topps Attax, where players battle head-to-head with one another, selecting pitchers and batters to “match up,” the same way that players do in Major League Baseball games.

Each Puck Attax game cards are in the shape of a hockey puck, featuring player image, player name, team logo, position and player ratings. Every NHL team is represented and special foil game cards featuring hockey’s brightest stars are included.  The product includes a starter box, which includes game cards and play-mat, as well as booster packs.

Rangers: News & Thoughts

  • The Rangers recalled P.A. Parenteau from Hartford and sent Dane Byers back down. [Newsday]

  • Larry Brooks says it's time to make another call up. He says it's time to sit Michal Rozsival and bring up Bobby Sanguinetti.

  • Crazy stats: Last night Prospal played 27:52  and Gaborik played 26:02 - those are ridiculously high minutes for forwards. It seemed like in the third period Gaborik and Prospal never left the ice.

  • Not sure if this was visible on TV last night, but I was at the game and several times throughout the game Eric Boulton was going after the Rangers after the whistle and pushing them. The first time it was definitely Gaborik, the second time I believe it was Prospal. If opposing teams are going to start that stuff with the Rangers better players, then not only should Brashear be going after Boulton, he needs to be in Kovalchuk's face to send a message.

  • Rangers fans (including myself) are starting to wonder what's going on with Sean Avery. He has been a shell of his former self. I can count on one hand how many times this season Avery was a factor for the Rangers and probably on a couple of fingers how many times he has played the agitating style that hockey fans have become accustomed to seeing Avery play. Last night for the second time in the last couple of games he was one-on-one with the opposing team's goalie and fanned on the shot.

Avery is not effective unless he's playing on the edge. If he goes over it every so often then that's something that the Rangers have to live with. But, this mellowed out Sean Avery is starting to irritate me more than the "in your face" Avery agitates Marty Brodeur.

  • Next game - in Ottawa on Saturday for an afternoon (2pm) game

Latest Rangers News: Leetch HOF, Injury Updates & Arnason Suspended

  • According to Steve Zipay (Newsday) the Rangers have suspended Tyler Arnason. Arnason who was signed as a UFA this summer by the Rangers has been in Hartford. According to Zipay the reason for the suspension and the length of the suspension are yet to be announced. Zipay says that the WolfPack have called up Chris Chappell from Charlotte

According to Laurie of Beyond the Blueshirts the reason for the suspension is because Arnason has signed a professional contract to play in Europe.

  • As posted before, Curtis Glencross has been suspended for 3 games by the NHL for his hit on Saturday night that left Chris Drury with a concussion.

  • It's still uncertain how long Drury will be out but John Tortorella wouldn't rule out Drury from playing against the Thrashers at the Garden on Thursday night

  • Brian Leetch will be inducted into the National Hockey League Hall of Fame tonight. There's a good write up in The Record about tonight's induction:

Leetch will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in Toronto tonight along with Devils president and general manager Lou Lamoriello, ex-Ranger Luc Robitaille, Brett Hull and Steve Yzerman, while ex-Rangers television analyst John Davidson, now the Blues’ president, will receive the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for outstanding contributions as a hockey broadcaster.

  • Brandon Dubinsky who broke his hand while blocking a shot in Calgary on Saturday night has a cast on his hand. No official confirmation as to how long Dubinsky will be out but it's said that he'll be out at least three weeks and it could be as long as two months.

Curtis Glencross Suspended 3 Games

According to TSN:
Calgary's Curtis Glencross has been suspended for three games following his blindside hit to the head that knocked New York Rangers captain Chris Drury out of Saturday night's game in Calgary.
Chris Drury sustained a concussion as a result of the hit. Andrew Gross says that coach Tortorella wouldn't rule Drury playing in the Rangers' next game on Thursday against Atlanta. But, as of now that seems unlikely.

The suspension is for this hit:

Video: Rangers/Canucks Mini Brawl & Bench Altercation

It was a pretty regular game up until this mini brawl in the third period which was sparked by Ryan Kesler jabbing Marian Gaborik with his stick as the teams were changing lines.

Then when all things appeared to be settled, Shane O'Brien, Darcy Hordichuk and Sean Avery got into an altercation on the bench. Thankfully Ray Ferraro was mic'd up between the benches working for TSN so we got to hear a little bit of what Sean Avery had to say (in the background at the 2:30 mark):
It sounds like Avery says "shut the f**k up, ya f**ckin bum, yeah, you're a f**ckin bum Horichuk... you don't even belong in this league"

Update: According to TSN:
Sources say Vancouver's Shane O'Brien will have a disciplinary hearing for using his stick to make contact with Ranger Sean Avery while both players were on their respective benches. O'Brien gave Avery a poke and Avery grabbed the stick out of O'Brien's hand.
Also, as expected:
Rangers forward Dane Byers was assessed an instigator penalty in a fight with Vancouver's Tanner Glass in the final five minutes of the game (18:50 of the third period) and that calls for an automatic one-game suspension and a $10,000 fine for Rangers coach John Tortorella.

Gameday Notes: Rangers vs Canucks

  • Rangers have named Vinnie Prospal an assistant captain according to Steve Zipay

  • Rangers defenseman Michael Del Zotto named the NHL's rookie of the month. Quite an accomplishment considering that this year's crop of rookies have performed as well as expected. Hopefully Del Zotto will continue to play well and get the recognition he deserves for his excellent play. Come June he could be in the running for the Calder.

  • If you attend Ranger games at the Garden you'll be seeing Hulk Hogan on the jumbotron (maybe more often than you'd like!). Hogan was at MSG last week for a press conference to discuss his new book and while he was there "the Hulkster donned a Blueshirt and used his trademark voice for some memorable shout-outs".

  • As for tonight's Rangers lineup, it sounds like Enver Lisin may not be in the lineup. On Sunday afternoon Lisin hurt his foot while blocking a shot, which is why in the third period Artem Anisimov was moved up to play alongside Gaborik and Prospal. According to Steve Zipay yesterday in practice Chris Higgins (who played his best game of the season against the Bruins) played on a line with Gaborik and Prospal.

  • In an interview yesterday Canucks head coach, Alain Vigneault said that Luongo, Daniel Sedin, Grabner, Hansen, Johnson and Demitra will all be out of the lineup.

  •  Keep your eye on Rick Rypien of the Canucks. He's only 5'11 & 185lbs but he can throw them with the big boys. Watch any of his fights on Youtube and you'll see him dancing with guys who significantly outweigh him and are at least half a foot taller than him.
Canucks expected lines:

Alex Burrows - Henrik Sedin  - Mikael Samuelsson
Mason Raymond - Ryan Kesler - Matt Pettinger
Tanner Glass - Kyle Wellwood - Steve Bernier
Darcy Hordichuk - Rick Rypien - Mario Bliznak

Willie Mitchell - Sami Salo
Kevin Bieksa - Aaron Rome
Christian Ehroff - Alex Edler

Andrew Raycroft

Rangers expected lines: (based on Lisin being injured)

Chris Higgins - Vinny Prospal - Marian Gaborik
Sean Avery - Brandon Dubinsky - Ryan Callahan
Dane Byers - Artem Anisimov - Ales Kotalik
Voros/Brashear - Chris Drury  - Brian Boyle

Dan Girardi - Marc Staal
Wade Redden - Matt Gilroy
Michael Del Zotto - Michal Rozsival

Doan Stands Up Hor Himself, Avery Apology (or lack of) & More NHL News

  • A site for Bruins fans that don't like their current ownership group - PleaseSellTheBruins.com

  • Almost a year ago and this Calgary columnist still hasn't forgotten Sean Avery's "sloppy seconds" comment. It's time to move on, don't ya think? [H/T Puck Daddy]

  • Maybe Dion Phaneuf should give Avery a "stern talking to" like Zdeno Chara did yesterday. By the way, that didn't seem to work as Avery played what appeared to be his most agitating game in a while.
  • Patrik Elias who has yet to play a game this season for the Devils could be back really soon

  • Props to Shane Doan of the Phoenix Coyotes for standing up for himself. He was laid out at the Ducks blue line by James Wisniewski by what looked like a dirty hit, inlvoving a forearm to the head. All too often we see the star players get protected by others on their team. Well, later in that same game Doan decided to hold Wisniewski accountable for his hit earlier in the game -- good to see.

Gameday Notes: Rangers vs Wild

Some updates regarding tonight's game from Andrew Gross, Steve Zipay and Russo's Rants:
  • Sean Avery, Marian Gaborik & Chris Higgins (all with knee injuries) won't play tonight in Minnesota.

  • Dane Byers has been recalled from Hartford and will be in the lineup. Donald Brashear will also be back in the lineup for the Rangers.

  • P.A. Parenteau who scored on Long Island in his first game as a Ranger will play in his second game this season.

  • Henrik Lundqvist is back in goal for the Rangers. No confirmation yet who will play for the Wild but it's likely Backstrom.

  • Petr Sykora will be in the lineup for the Wild against one of his former teams.

  • If you were excited to see Brashear tango with the "Boogey Man" then I'm sorry to disappoint you but Derek Boogaard is expected to be a scratch.

Gameday Notes: Rangers vs Islanders

Some updates regarding tonight's game from Andrew Gross & Blue Notes
  • Marian Gaborik is out tonight. Sounds like it's more precautionary than anything else. (Fingers crossed!)

  • P.A. Parenteau who was recalled from Hartford yesterday will make his Rangers regular season debut. He has 5 NHL games under his belt, dating back to the 06-07 season when he played 5 games in Chicago and got 1 assist.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if Parenteau steps right in and plays on one of the top two lines.

  • Brashear will be a scratch. Lingering effects of an injury. Possibly a hand or wrist injury.

Check out Scotty Hockey for his look at the Islanders and take a look at the rival blogs over at Lighthouse Hockey. Also check out Chris Botta, now working for NHL Fanhouse, but also running Islanders Point Blank who does a great job.

Video: Should Orr Be Suspended For Pushing Linesman?

During a fight last night between Colton Orr and George Parros, the linesman took a tumble after what appeared to be a shove by Orr. The question today around the messageboards is whether or not this is a suspendable offense. In my opinion, Orr was sticking his hand out to motion the linesman away (like you see in fights all of the time). The linesman was touched in the chest and went flying on his ass. It didn't look like much and since Orr didn't even appear to be looking in his direction, I'd be surprised if there was any suspension coming today from Colin Campbell.

Chelios Rejected Contract Offer By Rangers

The rumor this summer was that the Rangers were adding a veteran defenseman to their blue line. 47 year old Chris Chelios was one of the veterans whose name was mentioned more than a handful of times. Chelios recently signed a deal to play with the Chicago Wolves of the AHL.

According to the NY Post:
Rangers GM Glen Sather recently offered Chris Chelios an AHL contract to play in Hartford, but the veteran free agent defenseman rejected that offer to sign a deal with the Chicago Wolves in order to be closer to his family.
The Rangers still appear to be looking for a seventh defenseman however, as Mathieu Dandenault was signed to a professional contract (25 games) to play in Hartford. Chelios has not ruled out playing for the Rangers, he just preferred staying in Chicago if he was going to be playing in the AHL. Sather will continue to watch Chelios before deciding who is the best option.

Sean Avery's Weird Tattoo

Sean Avery has a new website and it has a photo section. One of the photos allows you to see this tattoo that Avery has on his forearm. Does anyone have any idea what the heck this tattoo means?

Update:
Just got my answer on the HFBoards - apparently it's a Radiohead reference

Calling All Leafs Fans --- Put A Bag On Your Head!

Show the Leafs how pissed you are at their losing ways. At the same time, help out some kids. Every purchase helps out the SickKids foundation. This is a great fund raising idea by a group of disgruntled Leafs fans. According to Upsetfan.com:
Our Goal is to raise $100,000 dollars for the SickKids foundation. We need your help in order to do so. Lets show SickKids and all of Canada how loyal we truly are.
What exactly is this and why are they doing it? According to the Globe & Mail:
Two disgruntled Maple Leafs fans have decided to turn the team's futility and Toronto's growing shame over it into something worth smiling about.Dave Armstrong, 47, a business partner in Wave Hockey, has joined plumbing and gas-fitting specialist Marco Aiello, 34, to sell special bags to cover the faces of embarrassed Leafs fans, plus T-shirts and other items that indicate the wearer is loyal - but upset.

Dandenault Possibly Rangers 7th Defenseman

Mathieu Dandenault is heading to Hartford (Rangers AHL affiliate) for a professional tryout. Dandenault has spent his entire NHL career playing for the Detroit Red Wings and Montreal Canadiens. Montreal didn't re-sign him this summer when he became a UFA.

According to Blue Notes:
Word is that the 33-year-old swingman has a tryout deal with Hartford. Dandenault played 13 years with the Red Wings and Canadiens (4-8-12 in 41 games in Montreal last year). He's 6-1, 210 and didn't make the Sharks on a training camp tryout.

If he plays well enough there, he could be an inexpensive option in New York down the road.
The Rangers had originally planned to carry seven defenseman but that didn't play out as expected when Alexei Semenov decided to head to the KHL instead.
