As you can see below, Marty Biron will get the start for the Blueshirts (7-5-1) tonight when they host the red hot St. Louis Blue (8-1-1) at the Garden. Callahan is back, David Perron is out, and Lundqvist is on the bench. I understand that Tortorella wants to stick to his game plan of starting Biron throughout the season, but this particular start baffles me.
Starting your backup goalie against arguably the hottest team in the league, at home where you need a big confidence-boosting win, and the beginning of a very important 4 game homestretch, is almost in the realm of absurdity. Not only has Henrik won the last 5 of 7 games he has played and posted an impressive shutout against New Jersey on Friday, but his confidence was rising with each start. Taking him out now in favor of the LESS TALENTED Biron to play at home against the VERY TALENTED Blues, is boggling.
The last time we saw Biron in net, he got lit up against the Atlanta Thrashers at home. If there's any game to put him in for this week, it should be on Thursday against the lowly Buffalo Sabres. The Rangers play the Washington Capitals on Tuesday, and Henrik will certainly get the start. So some rest is surely in order, and tonight seems to be it.
You never know what can happen. Let's hope that Biron posts a shutout, the Rangers block another 30 shots , and Brandon Dubinsky is the league leader in goals by the end of the night........and here's to hoping John Tortorella is as smart as he wants everyone to believe he is.
