Rangers Acquire John Scott; Physical Defenseman

The Rangers have added rugged defenseman John Scott from the Chicago Blackhawks for a 5th round pick. Certainly a depth move. Scott is known more for dropping his gloves than anything else. Oh yeah ... he's 6'8 and 270lbs!

Detroit trades Mike Commodore to Tampa for conditional draft pick.

I can only assume that this move was made by Tampa so that they can move out one of their defenseman before the deadline this afternoon.

NHL Trade Deadline 2012 - Where To Get The Most Up To Date Trades

The 2011-12 NHL Trade Deadline is upon us. NHL GMs around the league will be busy today trying to either get something of value for a player they no longer want or find that final piece to turn their team into serious Cup contenders. The official deadline is 3PM ET but I'm sure this year will be no different than in years past, with deals trickling in until after 5PM, as they await the NHL's approval.

Whether you are sitting at home on your couch all day, stuck in a classroom or feverishly refreshing your computer while you're sitting at work, here are the best places to get the latest trade information:
  • The HFBoards Trade Rumors forum is probably one of the best pages to keep refreshing throughout the day. I've been a member of HFBoards for a few years now and used to regularly visit their site long before I became a registered member. I've been using the site for the past few years because it is not just one source, you have thousands of members who are listening to all types of media throughout the day and are updating the forum with the latest news.
  • The NHL Network will have a special trade deadline special on the entire day from 8AM ET until 7:30PM ET. Throughout the day, the NHL Network "will simulcast TSN's 10-hour flagship show, TradeCentre '12."

  • If you use Twitter then you should follow @PuckCentral - we'll have the latest trade updates posted throughout the day. If you want to know the best hockey twitter accounts, we have that covered for you here.

  • If you are to follow no one else on Twitter then you must follow @TSNBobMcKenize and @DarrenDreger
Here's a Trade Deadline information sheet that the NHL had released two years ago, I'm sure that a lot of the information is still relevant, such as whether a trade can go through after 3PM ET and how a trade is made.

Are The Rangers Out Of The Running For Nash? Dreger Says So

I don't know about all Rangers fans, I'm sure there are plenty out there that want Glen Sather to make a trade to land Rick Nash, but I'm certain that feel the same as me and we've all let out a collective sigh of relief tonight. If Darren Dreger is correct, it appears that the Rangers are out of the bidding for superstar sniper, who is far and away the biggest name rumored to be available prior to Monday's NHL Trade Deadline.

Dreger states:
Hard to blame NYR for not blowing up team to make Nash trade.

NYR wasn't willing to pay price established for Nash prior to today + today CBJ asked for more than they were originally after.
Yeah, I've been against this since the rumor came out and over the past week my opinion on the matter hasn't changed one bit. I'm not against the Rangers adding one or two players. In fact, I think they need at least one more person who can put the puck in the net on a regular basis. However, I'm not against blowing up this entire roster, a team that has done pretty damn well for itself this season.

Rangers Trade Wolski & Clear Cap Space Ahead Of Monday's NHL Trade Deadline

The Rangers this afternoon traded Wojtek Wolski to the Florida Panthers for AHL defenseman Mike Vernace and a 2013 3rd round draft pick.

Not a bad return for the Rangers as they were able to clear cap space ($3.8M) and get something of value for a player who has been either injured or a healthy scratch this whole season. Not to mention, he will be a UFA this offseason.

Hopefully this was Sather's way of getting something for a player that wasn't being used before they lost him for nothing this summer. Or, clearing some cap for a move before Monday's NHL trade deadline to add someone who can score some goals.

Hopefully, that move doesn't involve Rick Nash, whose asking price right now according to rumors, is way too high. Not to mention, his cap hit for the next seven years is pretty insane as well.

Flames Twitter Feed Busts On Oilers & Hemsky

Update: Flames official website confirms what I had speculated earlier, it was meant for a personal twitter account and was published to the official team feed instead by mistake.
 --------------------------------

So a rumor came out that Ales Hemsky had been offered a two year deal worth $10M to stay in Edmonton. It didn't take long for the Flames Twitter feed to tweet about it:

The tweet was deleted and then quickly the Flames stated "We apologize for a tweet that was sent out from our account inadvertently. We are looking into the matter."  I can only assume that the Flames social media intern guru meant to tweet the message out on their own personal account and somehow they were still logged into their work account. #Priceless

Truthfully, they probably said what most of us were thinking. Hemsky may be a good player but he's almost as injury prone as our good friend Rick DiPietro.

What Would You Trade To Get Ovechkin?

You already know how I feel about the Rangers trading for Rich Rick Nash.

It's pretty much guaranteed that Alex Ovechkin is not going anywhere. It's almost a waste of our time discussing this. But, The Washington Times had this to say:
Whatever the case, it’s never good when a beloved former Capital such as Kolzig calls out the team’s leader, wonders about his “work ethic” and why he’s gotten away from playing “hard, no-nonsense, honesty type of hockey.” It also raises the possibility that, hey, maybe the front office is getting a little tired of Ovechkin’s act, too. Perhaps they would consider trading him if the right offer came along — if not now, under the gun, then in the less-hurried offseason.
Like I've already said, I think there's pretty much zero chance he's traded. But, what would you give up for him if you had the chance? I think it's safe to say he could command a hell of a lot more than Rick Nash.

As much as I like Ovechkin, I think he's someone I'd avoid unless the deal were something that you couldn't say no to.

This isn't just for Rangers fans, this is for fans of all teams. What would you give up for the man they call AO?

Is Dubinsky On The Trade Block? Rick Nash Not Such A Hot Idea

If you've read any rumor heading into next Monday's NHL Trade Deadline that involves the Rangers it likely involves forward Brandon Dubinsky heading out of New York. This isn't the first time that Dubinksky's name is being thrown around in potential deals and it likely won't be the last.

Dubinksy told The Bergen Record:
"You’ve just got to laugh that off," Dubinsky said after Saturday’s practice. "If it does happen, it would [stink]. I love it here."
I'm a huge Dubinsky fan and as disappointing as his offensive number have been this season he still brings a lot to this New York Rangers team. No matter how much he's contributed offensively he still has played an important role in helping this team get to number one in the East over half way through the season. He's a young leader on the team, plays a lot of minutes on the penalty kill and is always ready to stand up for teammates. He's strong as an ox and one of the better players on the team at cycling the puck down low and retaining possession of the puck.

I understand that in order to get you have to give. If the Rangers want to obtain a good player then they either have to give up someone good in return or else give up high draft picks or top prospects. Given Dubinsky's cap hit of $4.2M through 2014-15, the Rangers (or any team he plays for) certainly will be hoping for more offensively from Dubsinky. I'm not sure how realistic it is to expect Dubisnky to be a consistent 25+ goal scorer or a top 6 forward. I predicted several years ago that Dubisnky was likely going to be a consistent 20 goal scorer and a solid top 9 forward, with top potential being a second line forward. Unfortunately with playing time on Jaromir Jagr's wing a few years back I think many fans had much higher hopes for Dubi's offensive stats.

Unfortunately as we've seen over the years with guys like Chris Drury and Bobby Holik, when you pay a guy the money that a top offensive star gets paid, it doesn't necessarily equal offensive production.

If the right deal comes along I'd be willing to trade Dubinsky. I like him but like I said, you have to give to get. When the Rangers were a rumored suitor for Bobby Ryan earlier this year I had no problems including Dubinsky (although I was hesitant to see what other players/picks/prospects would also be included). However, I am very very very against a deal for Rick Nash. Not only is Nash going to require a lot of talent leaving the Rangers organization, Nash is going to take up a ton of cap space (to the rune of $7.8M) through 2017-18.

I see Rick Nash and his cap hit significantly tying up the Rangers cap-wise for the next 7 years. He automatically becomes top cap hit on the team. Does that cause any locker room problems? With this group the chemistry seems to be just right and right now. Rick Nash is scheduled to be a cap hit of $1M more per year than Lundqvist for the duration of his contract.

The one good thing about Nash is he's still pretty young at 27 years old, but as NHL snipers go, has he already peaked?

The Waiting Is Over, Christensen Traded To Wild!

Update: The Rangers also sent a  Conditional 2013 7th round pick to the Wild in the trade

I got some great news this afternoon when I popped my head onto Twitter. My most loathed New York Ranger since the days of Petr Nedved was today traded.

I'll admit, I was curious to read what the return would be once I heard that Christensen had been traded, but the truth is, I would've been happy with a fresh bag of dog poop in exchange.

According to Steve Zipay:
Breaking: NYR trade Erik Christensen to Wild for F Casey Wellman, who's going to AHL
If you really want to know how I feel about Erik Christensen, then read my post from October. Or, my reaction about the waiver acquisition back in December 2009. Or, any other post I've ever written on Puck Central that mentions his name.

I had coined the nickname "Charmin" for him because they are both soft and good for $hit. I've also said in the past that I'd trade him for a bag of dirty laundry.

Suffice to say, I'm kinda happy this glorious Friday afternoon.
